One of the major problems to face synthetic chemists in the future is the impact we have on the environment, be it from conventional pollution or less direct effects such as ozone depletion and global warming. In future years this will become more and more important, as global warming and other environmental pressures increase, and the political incentive to combat such problems gains a higher priority.

In response to this problem, some time ago we established the Leeds Cleaner Synthesis Group, sponsored by a consortium of pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies to develop synthetic organic chemistry which is less damaging to the environment. Much of this work so far has centered on using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as an environmentally acceptable replacement for conventional organic solvents.
